Cutting a Logo with the Silhouette Cameo Machine

Have you recently bought a Silhouette Cameo and want to start your first cutting project with this machine? Or maybe you are simply curious to find out what the Silhouette Cameo can do?

In this tutorial, we are going to teach you how to cut your first logo using the Silhouette Cameo machine. βœ…

That way, you will be able to personalize all kinds of surfaces (clothing, cardstock, everyday objects, and much more)!

What is the Silhouette Cameo machine?

The Silhouette Cameo is a cutting machine that lets you cut all sorts of designs on a variety of materials in order to create craft projects.

Among the best-known materials the Silhouette Cameo can cut, there is:

Heat-transfer vinyl:

PVC or PU heat-transfer vinyl

Heat-transfer vinyl is the material used to personalize clothing. This material is used by major clothing brands and textile personalization companies. πŸ‘•

Adhesive vinyl:

Vinyl sticker: the methods for personalizing with adhesive vinyl

Adhesive vinyl is similar to heat-transfer vinyl, because it is a material that lets you personalize a wide range of objects. Unlike heat-transfer vinyl, adhesive vinyl is not suited to being applied on clothing, but it is used to personalize everyday objects such as water bottles, mugs, cabinets, or even windows.

You can also use the Silhouette Cameo machine to cut other types of material with a maximum thickness of 3mm, such as cardstock, felt, or fabric.

There are currently 5 models of the Silhouette Cameo. The Silhouette Cameo 5 is the very latest model, released in France in October 2023. πŸ†•

The Silhouette machines are controlled with software that you need to install on your computer. This is the Silhouette Studio software, which is free.

In the first part of this demonstration, we are going to use heat-transfer vinyl to cut our logo with the Silhouette Cameo cutting machine.

In the second part, we are going to show you how to personalize a t-shirt with your logo made from heat-transfer vinyl.

How do you cut your first logo with the Silhouette Cameo machine?

Follow the steps to cut your logo with the machine:

1 - Insert your logo into the Silhouette Studio software

As we mentioned above, the Silhouette Cameo machines all work with the Silhouette Studio software (which is free). So to cut your first logo with the machine, you will need to insert your logo into the software.

To insert your logo, two methods are possible depending on the type of design. The first method consists of creating your design directly in the software, and the second method consists of importing your logo into the software:

Method 1 (create your logo in the software):

For this method, we are going to create a design using text only. πŸ…°

  • Click on the "A" icon in the Silhouette Studio software.

  • Type your text in the box by clicking with the left button of your mouse, then using your keyboard.
  • Underline the text, then choose the font that suits you.

As you can see, the process is simple. Now here is a tip to enhance your text using a text outline:

  • Click on your text, then on the outline icon at the bottom right.
  • Then click on "outline" and choose the outline size you want. Once you have the right size, click on "apply".

  • Your text will then have a more modern look ✨:

Method 2 (to import your logo directly into the software):

To import your logo into Silhouette Studio, it is recommended to vectorize it and convert it beforehand to the DXF format. Vectorizing removes all the pixels from your logo, ensuring perfect precision when cutting with the machine. (Note that when you use method 1 to create a logo, it is already vectorized by the software.)

Here is how to proceed:

  • We will need to install and open the free software Inkscape. The advantage of this software is that it lets us vectorize the logos (single-color ones) that we created outside the Silhouette Studio software. πŸ‘
  • Import your logo into the software.
  • Select your logo with the left click of your cursor.
  • Click on "Path" ➑️ "Trace Bitmap".

  • Then click on "OK". βœ”οΈ

  • A second logo will appear, which is the vectorized logo. (To identify the vectorized logo, zoom in on the two designs and the logo that is not pixelated will be the vectorized one). πŸ”Ž
  • Please delete the pixelated logo.

  • If your logo is not vectorized perfectly, you can change the settings in "Mode" and in "Options" inside the vectorizing panel.
  • Once everything is OK, click on "File" ➑️ "Save As" ➑️ Save your design in the "DXF" format ➑️ Click on "Save".
  • Now, all you have to do is go into the Silhouette Studio software and import your logo in the DXF format. (by clicking on "File" ➑️ "Open")

Once your logo is imported, resize it by clicking on it using the 4 white squares at the corners of the logo.

2 - Load the material to be cut into the cutting machine

We are now going to load the heat-transfer vinyl into our Silhouette Cameo machine.

  • Turn on the machine.

  • Take the cutting mat included with the machine and place your heat-transfer vinyl (or other paper to be cut) on the right side. Make sure no bubbles formed while laying down the heat-transfer vinyl.

  • Position the mat correctly in the machine.

  • Press the small up arrow so that the machine pulls the mat in with its rollers.

3 - Start cutting the logo

Just before moving on to cutting, it is important to point out that when you use heat-transfer vinyl with any cutting machine, you must always cut it mirrored (this only applies to heat-transfer vinyl).

To position your logo mirrored, go back into the Silhouette Studio software, right-click on the design, then click on "horizontal mirror". πŸͺž

Your logo will then flip over.

Now, click on the "Send" section located at the top right of the machine. This is where we need to enter the cutting settings so that the machine can correctly cut your logo.

The cutting settings will differ depending on the type of material and especially on its thickness. So check with your paper supplier for the right settings.

As for our heat-transfer vinyls, the cutting settings are listed in the description of each one. πŸ˜‰

For this project, we are going to use 3D heat-transfer vinyl.

Once you have entered the right settings, click on the "SEND" button at the bottom right.

Starting the cut in Silhouette Studio

Cutting your logo with the Silhouette Cameo machine can take some time (usually between 30 seconds and 3 minutes).

When the cut is finished, the machine will stop automatically and all you will have to do is press the small down arrow on your machine to unload it. ⬇️

4 - Weed the logo

With your scissors, cut away the whole area around your logo without touching it.

Now get ready to weed your design!

Weeding consists of removing the excess heat-transfer vinyl (all the surplus that is around or inside your logo).

Carefully remove the surplus heat-transfer vinyl. If you accidentally remove part of your logo, it will be hard to fix, and you will have to start a new cut over again.

That is why we advise you to use a hook when weeding your logo. This tool will let you remove the excess heat-transfer vinyl with precision.

That's it! You have officially cut your first logo with the Silhouette Cameo cutting machine. πŸ˜‰

How do you personalize a t-shirt with your logo?

The second part of this tutorial is for people who used heat-transfer vinyl to make their logo. We are now going to teach you how to apply it to your t-shirt! (or other textile) πŸ‘š

1 - Place your logo in the right spot on the t-shirt

To place your logo in the right spot on the t-shirt, several different ways are possible.

Here we are going to focus on the ways to correctly place a logo on the front of the t-shirt over the heart.

Method 1:

Use the edge of your t-shirt collar as a vertical line. The center of your logo will be placed on this line.

How do you place a print on a t-shirt?

To find the perfect spot for your logo, it is generally advised to place 4 or 5 fingers from the bottom of the collar, and this is where the top part of your logo should be placed. πŸ‘‹

Method 2:

If you are never sure about the placement of your logo, the easiest option is to order a placement guide for t-shirts. This can also save you time. βŒ›

All you have to do is place the guide on your t-shirt to get the exact indication of the right position for your logo.

2 - Press the logo using heat

Once your logo is properly positioned, you can use either your iron or a heat press to apply the logo onto the garment.

The heat press will give your personalization better longevity, but if you are taking your first steps in textile printing, I advise you to start by using your iron.

Make sure you are in a safe room of your home, away from children.

Remove all easily flammable objects around you, and if you are using an iron, do not press directly on your table. Please either press on an ironing board or use an ironing cushion to avoid any heat marks. ♨️

Once you are ready, place a sheet of baking paper to protect your t-shirt from the heat, heat your iron to 150 degrees, and press while applying firm pressure for 20 seconds.

3 - Remove the carrier from the heat-transfer vinyl

Wait a few seconds for the heat to dissipate and remove the transparent carrier from the heat-transfer vinyl.

4 - Become a textile printing expert

You can now admire your very first personalization with heat-transfer vinyl! 🀩

To make sure your logo soaks into the fabric and that it will hold up through all your machine washes, place the sheet of baking paper back over the design and press again for 10 seconds.

So making a logo with heat-transfer vinyl using the Silhouette Cameo machine and personalizing a t-shirt isn't that hard after all! πŸ˜€
