How to Remove Heat-Transfer Vinyl?

When you personalize textiles regularly with heat-transfer vinyl, none of us are safe from a vinyl application mistake on a garment, and we know all too well that a small slip-up could cost us dearly!

So we are going to see whether it is possible to remove vinyl using the tools we already have at home, to try to fix the damage caused by an application mistake.

Method 1: The Hot Water Technique

This method is very simple, however it is only recommended if the vinyl was applied that same day.

The Steps:

1️⃣- Take a kettle and put some water in it to heat up.

2️⃣- While the water is boiling, grab a basin big enough to hold the badly applied textile.

3️⃣- Then pour the hot water you have boiled into the basin.

4️⃣- Put the badly applied fabric into the basin and don't burn yourself!

5️⃣- Wait 2 minutes so that the hot water can "soak into" the vinyl.

6️⃣- After this short wait, take the fabric out of the hot water and quickly grab a small weeding tool.

7️⃣- In some spots, the vinyl should come off more easily than in others. As a result, you can use your tool to grab the corners that have lifted, in order to slowly peel off the whole design.

We recommend watching the video by "La Fee Milie", which is very informative on this subject 😉

Method 2: Removing Vinyl with Your Iron

Even with method 1, your vinyl still hasn't come off?

We are going to have to pull out the big guns with the foolproof reverse iron method!

This technique works just as well for recent applications as for old ones where the vinyl glue has thoroughly soaked into the fabric. 👕

The Steps:

1️⃣- Grab an iron and set it to 180 degrees (watch your fingers once again).

2️⃣- Take the textile (in this example a t-shirt) on which you have the badly applied design.

3️⃣- Grab your iron and place it inside the t-shirt.

4️⃣- Place the iron under the fabric at the spot where the vinyl is visible from the outside.

5️⃣- Wait like this for several seconds, the vinyl will slowly start to melt and curl up on itself.

6️⃣- At this point, you can grab your tool and start removing the applied section!

Your vinyl should come off easily. However, when you remove vinyl, there are sometimes glue residues left behind by the vinyl. In that case, here is the method to remove the glue residue after taking off the vinyl:

1️⃣- Let your fabric rest so that it is no longer hot.

2️⃣ Once the fabric has returned to its original temperature, take some acetone (be careful, this liquid is flammable). Take a small piece of cotton and soak it with acetone.

3️⃣- Rub the cotton with the acetone over the glue residue on the fabric and it will disappear!

4️⃣- Finally, then wash your t-shirt so that it is nice and clean and you're all set!

Removing vinyl may seem like a difficult or even impossible task at first glance, and yet the methods explained in this tutorial are simple, quick and effective!

Feel free to share these tips with your fellow crafters, because everyone makes slip-ups with vinyl. 🙈

Even though it is important to be able to remove vinyl when you make a mistake, it is essential that the vinyl holds perfectly once it is applied to the textile!

At Paper Transfer, we offer Premium vinyl that can withstand washes at 60°C while still being thin and very flexible 🤩
