How to Remove Heat Transfer Vinyl

When you regularly customize clothing with heat transfer vinyl, none of us is immune to the occasional application mistake on a garment, and we all know that one small slip-up can cost you dearly!

So let's find out whether you can remove heat transfer vinyl with tools you already have at home, and try to undo the damage caused by an application mistake.

Method 1: The Hot Water Technique

This method is very simple, but it's only recommended if the vinyl was applied that same day.

The Steps:

1️⃣- Fill a kettle with water and put it on to heat.

2️⃣- While the water is boiling, grab a basin big enough to hold the garment with the misapplied design.

3️⃣- Then pour the boiling water into the basin.

4️⃣- Put the garment in the basin, and be careful not to burn yourself!

5️⃣- Wait 2 minutes so the hot water can "soak into" the vinyl.

6️⃣- After this short wait, take the fabric out of the hot water and quickly grab a small pair of weeding tweezers.

7️⃣- The vinyl should come off more easily in some spots than in others. That means you can use your tweezers to grab the corners that have lifted and slowly peel off the whole design.

Method 2: Removing Vinyl with Your Iron

Tried method 1 and your vinyl still won't budge?

Then it's time to bring out the big guns with the foolproof reverse iron method!

This technique works just as well on recently applied designs as on older ones where the vinyl's adhesive has fully soaked into the fabric. 👕

The Steps:

1️⃣- Grab an iron and set it to 180°C (once again, watch your fingers).

2️⃣- Take the garment (a T-shirt, in this example) with the misapplied design.

3️⃣- Take your iron and slip it inside the T-shirt.

4️⃣- Position the iron under the fabric, right where the vinyl shows on the outside.

5️⃣- Hold it there for several seconds. The vinyl will slowly start to melt and curl up on itself.

6️⃣- At this point, you can grab your tweezers and start removing the design!

Your vinyl should come off easily. However, removing vinyl sometimes leaves glue residue behind. If that happens, here's how to get rid of the leftover glue once the vinyl is off:

1️⃣- Let your fabric sit until it's no longer hot.

2️⃣ Once the fabric is back to its normal temperature, get some acetone (careful, it's flammable). Soak a small piece of cotton in the acetone.

3️⃣- Rub the acetone-soaked cotton over the glue residue on the fabric, and it'll disappear!

4️⃣- Finally, wash your T-shirt so it's nice and clean, and you're all set!
