Weeding heat-transfer vinyl: What is weeding in flocking?

Heat-transfer vinyl is the material used when flocking textiles to personalize clothes with your own designs.

Flock personalization on textiles requires a long process of creating and preparing the design. Here are the main steps to follow:

1️⃣- Cutting out the logo with a cutting machine (Silhouette Cameo, Cricut, Vevor...)

2️⃣- Weeding

3️⃣- Applying the flock onto a textile

Today we are going to learn exactly what the weeding step of your designs is.

What is weeding heat-transfer vinyl?

To put it simply, weeding consists of removing the excess heat-transfer vinyl that your cutting machine has cut. The excess vinyl is all the cut vinyl that surrounds your design but does not belong to your design. This step is often done with weeding tools such as the hook.

Once your cutting machine has cut out the artwork, your heat-transfer vinyl logo will not be visible yet.

It is only after removing the excess vinyl during weeding that you will finally be able to admire the beautiful creation you are about to flock onto a garment. 👕

Be careful, however, not to remove pieces of vinyl that belong to your logo. This is likely to happen to you regularly, and it is hard to put the pieces back after weeding them away...

Weeding vinyl: How do you weed your vinyl in the best possible way?

As you probably know, heat-transfer vinyl is made of two distinct parts. The first is the clear plastic carrier, which is essential for cutting and applying the flock, and the second material is the part that will be applied onto the textiles. These two materials are stuck to one another during cutting, which makes it very hard, even impossible, to weed your heat-transfer vinyl by hand.

In order to get a perfect flock with vinyl, we have put together a weeding kit specially designed to easily and quickly remove the excess heat-transfer vinyl. ✅

The heat-transfer vinyl weeding step can be tedious if you do not have the right tools. Especially if the logos you want to make are very detailed. The more details there are in your logo, the longer the weeding will take.

Here are the various tools you cannot do without for successful weeding:

The Spatula:

Thanks to the spatula, you can lift the parts of your heat-transfer vinyl that have stayed stuck to your cutting mat. It is therefore very handy to use so you do not crease your vinyl.

The Weeding Hook:

The vinyl weeding hook is the essential tool in this kit. With it, you will be able to easily remove all the excess heat-transfer vinyl from your artwork, and thanks to its fine tip, even the tiniest details will not be spared. 😉

The Tweezers:

Unlike the hook, the tweezers are not pointed. In general, they will not be used to pierce and remove the excess vinyl, even though it is a job they can absolutely do.

As we mentioned earlier in the article, we can sometimes remove parts of the logo with the hook. Thanks to the tweezers, you will be able to delicately put them back on the clear carrier of the vinyl.

The Scraper:

It often happens that small pieces of flock end up stuck to the machine's cutting mat. These pieces then cling to the mat's adhesive, and it is impossible to remove them all by hand. Thanks to the scraper, all you have to do is scrape and, in one pass, they will come off! 🤩

As you can see, the weeding process is a long step of flocking that should not be taken lightly, because if it is not done correctly, you risk damaging your logo.

When you have a single flock design to make, the time spent on weeding the vinyl will not be significant to you. However, when you start cutting several dozen flock logos a day, you will notice that the weeding step is significantly longer if you do not have the right tools to weed the designs.
