- Your trusty cutting machine: Silhouette Cameo, Cricut... Or your favorite pair of scissors.
- A heat press, a mini press or even a good iron.

The personalized school bag with a first name
If you don't have a cutting machine, I recommend going for a slightly rounded pair of scissors so you can create pretty curves and properly remove the little fill bits of heat transfer vinyl. All you have to do is write your child's first name on the heat transfer vinyl of your choice, then cut it out precisely.
For the best result, remember to carefully check the size and the spot where you want to apply it on the personalized school bag before moving on to cutting. Patience pays off!
If you have a cutting machine, it will only take about fifteen minutes to create your design. To do this, choose the font you want to personalize your child's first name: a joined cursive script like at school for a retro effect, or a detached print that's easy to read for a touch of modernity. Then type the first name into your software and above all, don't forget to set it to mirror mode before launching the cut. All that's left is to weed it with your hook.
Once your personalized design is cut, you can move on to the flocking:
- Lay your school bag flat on your table and feel free to use a measuring ruler to make sure your design is well placed.
- Carefully place your design on the spot of the bag where you want the first name to appear.
- Gently apply a Teflon sheet on top to protect it from the heat of the heat press or your iron.
- Then it's time for the flocking! If you have a heat press like the one from paper-transfert.fr, all you need to do is turn it on, place your bag with the design on it, and in a few seconds the job is done, just follow the instructions written on the vinyl. If your bag is more bulky, you can always opt for a mini heat press for more ease. And if you have neither one nor the other, a good iron works just as well. Hold it over your Teflon sheet at constant heat for about twenty seconds. Don't use steam, it can damage your heat transfer vinyl by making it wetter than necessary.

For this DIY, I chose to create my own custom designs myself. To do this nothing could be simpler, if you don't have a cutting machine, all you have to do is draw your designs directly onto the heat transfer vinyl and move on to cutting.
If you have a cutting machine, you can draw the desired shapes and designs directly onto a white sheet of paper, scan it to yourself and open it in your cutting software. I recommend sticking to simple, solid designs and shapes to make sure your software handles your design well. Once your design is ready, set it to mirror mode and send it to be cut. Then all you have to do is weed it to see your beautiful creations for your personalized school bag appear. Way to go.
For the rest, you can follow the same steps as the tutorial for a personalized school bag with a first name: all you have to do is place your custom patches in the desired spots and give them a good press with the iron (no steam, we're saying it again just in case you were tempted) or the heat press. To make sure your patches don't move during the heat pass, you can opt for a roll of high temperature tape on the online shop. And above all, don't forget the Teflon sheet!
